What to Expect with Window Replacement in San Diego?
Are you the type of person who likes to know what you’re getting into before you take on a home improvement project? If so, you might have questions like:
- To what degree will my home life be disrupted during the process?
- Will I have to move out during construction?
- Will the money I spend on this project be worth it?
Many home improvement projects are very involved and will definitely cause a disruption to your home life, while others really aren’t all that bad. Take window replacement as an example. When you work with a professional window replacement company in San Diego, the installation may only take one day. Of course, the entire process from start to finish will be longer, but the actual time your home will be under construction will only be a day or two.
We talked with Michal Bohm, owner of San Diego window replacement company BM Windows, and he explained the entire process to us. According to Bohm, the first step in window replacement is to have someone come out to your house to take careful measurements. Since typical replacement windows occupy the same spots as your existing windows, those spaces are measured so your new windows fit perfectly within the openings. If you want to have larger windows installed than those that are currently in your home, you will need to bring in a contractor to modify the spaces to support the larger windows.
When you place the order for your new windows, you will start by choosing a brand of windows. From there, you can select from a number of options and upgrades. You can choose to upgrade the insulating properties of the windows to make them more energy efficient. You can also improve their sound suppressing abilities, upgrade the hardware, or choose to add decorative details. Every replacement window is made to order, so any combination of options is available.
Once your windows are ordered from the manufacturer, it will typically take anywhere from a month or two for your new windows to arrive. Then, an installation date will be scheduled. According to Bohm, professional window installers are able to replace all of the windows in an average-sized home in just one day. For larger homes, the process may take two days. There is no need to move out of your home during the installation, and there are no additional repairs to make once the windows are done being installed.
The window replacement company will likely dispose of your old windows for you, and will hopefully clean up after themselves once they are done with the installation.
You will then be provided with the windows’ warranty information, which you will need to register with the manufacturer. Bohm highly encourages his customers to register their warranties right away. Many replacement windows come with good warranties that cover the repair or replacement of defective windows for as long as you own your home.
While the above process can take a couple of months after all is said and done, there is really only a day or two of disruption to your home, and in the end, you have a home full of new, energy-efficient windows!
